Hindhead Golf Club hosted the southern qualifier for the prestigious Brabazon Trophy on Tuesday 14th May. 132 elite amateur golfers from around the UK and Europe were competing for 33 places in the field for the English Men’s Open Amateur Stroke Play Championship for the Brabazon Trophy which will be played at Alwoodley Golf Club, Yorkshire, from 30th May to 2nd June.
Warwickshire’s Liam Phipps and George Leversuch of Essex led the way, both scoring four-under 66.
The Brabazon Trophy is England Golf’s flagship tournament for men, attracting an international amateur field and two past winners, Scotland’s Sandy Lyle and South Africa’s Charl Schwartzel have gone on to win Majors.
Phipps, who works at The Belfry, also qualified for last year’s Brabazon and had the top individual score at the 2018 English Champion Club tournament. The 23-year-old from Olton commented: “It’s a goal to try to get a little bit better every year. I’ve played the county stuff and done well in that and now the plan is to try to play well in national events this year.”
Leversuch, from Wanstead, matched his score with a round which started with four birdies in the first six holes on the Par 70 course. He had three more on the back nine, including one on the last.
Hindhead’s Club Secretary, Chris Donovan said “We were delighted to welcome England Golf and all of these fine players to Hindhead. They have been extremely generous in their praise of the course and its presentation. A number who have never played here before loved the golfing test it provides and we hope to welcome some of them back in our own Men’s Scratch Open, the Devil’s Punchbowl on 28th July.”
